You Did That with My Digital Studio?

Did you know that My Digital Studio can be used to create pretty much anything that you want to make with paper?

I used MDS this week to make paper covers for the DVDs from our LovenStampfuls Stamp N Share. (I send these out to the demonstrators in our group who live too far away to join us for our monthly meetings).

I thought it might be fun to dress the disks up a bit, using the Sweet Pea Designer Paper Pack (available for purchase & download to add to the MDS program). And of course I threw on some Hodgepodge Hardware and buttons to match--gotta love that you can never run out of a certain frame :-)

I printed out the page, cut it in half with my paper cutter, then folded to make the DVD pocket.

If you've never purchased any of the extra downloads available for MDS, you'll want to give it a try. The Sweet Pea Stitched Felt is also in the My Sweet Pea Digital Kit (I used it for notepaper recently) and you'll definitely want to add this kit to your collection. It includes the felt plus 48 patterns of new Designer Series Paper and a 5 piece 'stamp' set.

**My Digital Studio Tip** To find out which Digital Downloads are new, visit my online store and click "Digital Crafting" in the left column. Pick "my digital studio downloads", then "newest downloads." You can add the downloads you'd like to your shopping cart, then check out (don't forget that you earn free Sale-A-Bration gifts if you order $50!). After you check out, you'll be able to download directly to your computer. It's easy to install the new items, too--just run the auto-install and the papers, stamps or embellishments will be added to the right folders and you can use them right away!

I've also used My Digital Studio to create recipe cards! I formatted a 12x12" scrapbook page so that I could cut it into 6 recipe cards, each sized 3 x 4".

These would be a great project as a gift. You could even do them for a wedding shower! Have everyone send you the recipes ahead of time, maybe with a picture of themselves or the food prepared, and then put a collection of recipe cards together as a gift for the bride-to-be.

And speaking of the recipe cards, I'll be teaching a tutorial on these in person this coming Monday!

Butterflies Are Everywhere

Last year I had a fabulous time creating a set of beautiful spring butterfly cards, and then I offered them as a class in Champaign, Illinois plus as a 'to go' kit so that participants could create their cards at home on their own schedule.

Well this year I couldn't resist repeating my scallop butterfly cards, but with an updated twist--the new Shades of Spring Designer Series Paper from the 2010 Occasions Mini Catalog!

So of course I'm offering a new butterfly card class--and like last year, you can participate by attending in person, or by ordering a kit "to go" that will be mailed to your home, with all the pieces ready to assemble.

Beautiful Wings Butterfly Class
Monday, March 29th
6:30 to 8:30 pm
Za's Restaurant by Marketplace Mall, Champaign, Illinois

You'll make 6 cards (each measures 5-1/4 x 5-1/4") and a matching designer gift pouch. Your class fee of $25 includes all the pre-cut, pre-embossed cardstock and Designer Series Paper, plus buttons, ribbons, square envelopes and printed detailed directions with photos. Just use your own stamps and inks for the greetings.

Or if you'd like to get the BONUS kit, you can add on the Chit-Chat Rub-ons and Fine Flourish stamp to finish your cards as I've created them. Plus you can add the BONUS kit at a great discount--only $14 extra (normally $20.90!).

If you can't attend, your kit will be ready to mail on March 30th, and your goodies for the class projects will arrive at your doorstep.

It's easy to sign up online--you can pay via PayPal online or mail a check to me instead. Just visit my Butterfly Class sign-up page.

When is an Easter Egg Not An Easter Egg?

At the Stampin' Up! Leadership Conference in Phoenix last month, Carrie Cudney showed a fabulous technique using water droplets to create a textured image. I created these cards for my Stamp Club in February, using Carrie's technique.

I don't remember if Carrie gave it a name or not, but I've been calling it Splattered Silhouettes, since the effect works best on silhouette images (bold with lots of rubber). The single Butterfly Accent stamp from the back page of the Occasions Mini Catalog is perfect!

Splattered Silhouettes Technique:
  • Ink the silhouette stamp with a medium to dark color ink.
  • Using your finger or a paintbrush, gently flick water onto the inked stamp.
  • Apply stamp to paper.
  • (With this technique, ‘less is more’ with the water. Too much liquid will make your image blurry. )
We also used the sweet little butterflies from the Beautiful Wings Embosslit and added them to the card in Perfect Plum cardstock.

And the Eggcellent Eggs Kit (117179) was used for the decorative strips in Bashful Blue or Pretty in Pink. We also used some of the rub-ons from the same Kit for the background (see the white swirls?) and on the right-hand card, the rhinestone on the butterfly image is actually a sticky-back rhinestone from the Eggs Kit. Even though the Eggcellent Eggs Kit is listed for egg decorating, I highly recommend getting one to use with your papercrafting--there are so many little goodies in that package! For $9.95, it's one of the best bargains in the Occasions Mini Catalog.

There's Something Wrong With This Stamp

It's like one of those magazine pages made for 6 year olds (and I'm an expert at those ;-) Can you spot what's wrong with the stamp in this picture?

Did you get it? Yes, the stamp is filthy with ink stains on the corners, but (gasp) that doesn't bother me.

The "what's wrong" is that there are both a sticker and a stamp on the same side of the block of wood! Wait a minute here... isn't the rubber part supposed to go on the opposite side of the wood block?

Well not in this case. The Something Sweet stamp set from the Occasions Mini Catalog has a fabulous circle image that can be used in so many ways. But when the stamp set arrives, the center part (the solid rubber circle) is die-cut to pull out, so that the circle image doesn't catch ink in the center and smudge.

**TIP** Instead of throwing the center part away, I turned my block of wood over and mounted it on the back side. On the sample card above, I used the solid circle to make the large solid circles in the background layer.

Cool, eh?! So take a look at your spare rubber pieces--they're not all destined for the rubbish bin. (Stampin' Up! even uses them to pave playgrounds ;-)

BTW, I've actually had this stamp set hidden away since FOREVER--it was one of the gifts I received at the Stampn' Up! Founder's Circle Retreat way back in October. If you missed my posts on that fun event, you'll want to be sure to check back and see them!

Mounting Your Stamps: A Stamping 101 Tutorial

If you're already a stamper, this may seem pretty fundamental to you. But if you're new to the world of rubber stamping, sometimes it's tricky to find the basic information that you need to get started.

When your Stampin' Up! stamps arrive, they come unmounted: the wood blocks, the die-cut rubber sheets and the sticker sheet. They come this way because they're less expensive for Stampin' Up! to produce, and thereby less expensive for us to purchase. Yay! :-) Stampin' Up! stamps are a great value, especially if you compare the price of a full set to the cost of buying every stamp individually.

Here you'll learn how to mount your stamps--or at least the way that *I* mount my stamps. The more you stamp, the easier it will be to adapt a method that works perfectly for you.

Scrapbooking with 250 Princesses

Key words: BRING GLITTER!

This past weekend I had the privilege of making scrapbook pages with about 250 little girls at the Champaign Park District's annual Daddy Daughter Princess Ball.

I've found that when 200+ princesses between the ages of 2 and 12 need to make a project, it's best to keep it simple :-)

This page features the Beary Best Friends stamp set from the Build-A-Bear collection, plus lots of Dazzling Diamonds Glitter, applied with the 2-Way Glue Pen. The hearts are cut from the Stampin' Up! Hearts & Brackets die for the Big Shot, and the Whisper White cardstock was cut with the Top Note die.

Each girl at the Ball got to make her own page to take home, all set for adding a picture with Dad.

When 250+ kids have access to Dazzling Diamonds Glitter, the results are definitely full of sparkle!

I had lots of terrific help at our table from several Park District volunteers--they went home covered in glitter, but we all had a good time!

Where Did I Put That Roll of Ribbon?

Do you ever get going on a project, only to realize that you don't have the right color of ribbon/brad/button/whatever on hand?

One solution would of course be to buy one of everything Stampin' Up! carries, but then your problem would be finding the particular roll of ribbon you needed among the 100's :-)

Another solution would be to sign up for my Stamps in the Mail Club, where the supplies are all at your fingertips in the project kit.

A third solution would be to create whatever embellishment you need from what you already have on hand... yes, let the *magic* begin!!

On this card, I really wanted to use a strip of pretty Barely Banana ribbon to match the Barely Banana cardstock and the color in the Shades of Spring Designer Series Paper. But alas, I didn't have any Barely Banana ribbon handy. So instead, I created a paper ribbon from my leftover card stock!

Technique Tip -- Paper Ribbons:
1. cut a strip of paper the width of your desired ribbon
2. holding each end of the strip, run the card stock back and forth across a table edge to break the fibers
3. bend, tie or add flippy folds (as above) to your card stock ribbon

"Mom, Can I Use Your Cell Phone?"

When you're 6, your Valentine's Day awareness is pretty much limited to a fun class party. You get to hand out all the valentines that you made (painstakingly writing out everyone's names) and collect all the fun valentines that your friends made for you.

Today is my daughter's Valentine's Day party at school, and she's excited to take in the valentines she made. Really, what says "Happy Valentine's Day" more than a red construction paper heart? :-)

I know... it's actually including candy that makes or breaks the valentine when you're 6. ;-) So we tucked a sucker into each valentine, making it appear that each of the cute Build-A-Bears is actually holding onto the stick.

Abby had fun stamping all the bears with our Beary Best Friends stamp set, of course matching up the boy and girl bears for each child in her class.

We also added the Beary Nice Wishes greeting, "I {heart} you beary much," for the extra 'cute' factor.

You might also notice that Abby added "BFF" on this valentine, even though she admitted to me that she didn't know what it meant. She just knew that's what you were supposed to say to your friends. Maybe I should worry about her 'texting' her friends sooner than I thought!!

How to Cut Cardstock: A Stamping 101 Tutorial

It's one thing to look at fabulous card ideas in the Stampin' Up! catalog or here online, but another thing to actually be able to turn those ideas into real cards at home.

One of the basic skills you'll need to grasp is "How to Cut Cardstock," so I've created a handy Stamping 101 Video Tutorial showing you exactly that. Yes, it's simple, but I get a lot of questions on this from new stampers. Everyone has to learn somewhere, right?

You'll want to start off with a good paper cutter--scissors alone aren't going to do the job for you. Stampin' Up! has a great Paper Cutter (104152) that I use in my own stamping studio.

video

I mentioned my Stamps in the Mail Club in the Video Tutorial. Remember that with Stamps in the Mail Club, your cardstock is pre-cut for you, so you don't have to worry about this cutting business ;-)

Designer T-shirts... by Stampin' Up!?

The other day I mentioned that I'm loving the Sweet Pea Stitched Felt flowers as part of the My Digital Studio program, but I neglected to mention that I'm enjoying them in 'real life' too--not just in my virtual stamping!

My daughter and I were visiting with a stamping friend (actually, another demonstrator from my LovenStampfuls group!) when we noticed that the flowers on her Gymboree shirt looked an awful lot like the Stitched Felt Flowers from the Occasions Mini Catalog.

Since we like Gymboree but don't always like the pricetags, Shirley and I decided that it would be perfect to make some shirts using our Stampin' Up! felt flowers! Here are the results.

On the pink Hanna Anderson t-shirt ('borrowed' from my daughter's drawer), I used thread to stitch on a spattering of the felt pieces plus a couple of buttons from the Sherbet Designer Button set in the matching Pretty in Pink.

To get the pieces in place and then make it easy to sew them on without having to replace them all, I actually tacked them down with Stampin' Up!'s Tombow Multiadhesive.

I also did the same with an inexpensive white t-shirt from another big chain.

Of course you can also use the Felt Flowers on things like notebooks (check this one out) and cards (here are a few). They're actually one of the featured products in my Stamps in the Mail Club this Round, which begins in February! It's not too late to sign up! (learn more on my website)

Here's a note from Patrice, a Stamps in the Mail Club newbie:
I cheated and put the heart box together since the Stamps in the Mail package came on Friday. I am now convinced I love chipboard. I previously had not really done much with it, but make a few star ornaments. The Heart Box is super fabulous and it's not embellished yet. There are Hershey Kisses in it (not as many as there was originally) and it is so stinkin' cute. Everyone at my house is convinced they are getting it for Valentine's Day[...]. I Thank You so much for having Stamps in the Mail. It is such a great idea and the cards are terrific. I love love love the box too!!!
(You can check out the project Patrice is talking about...)

If you'd like to go ahead and join us for this current round of the 3-month Stamps in the Mail Club, you can sign up by emailing me or you can even pay online via PayPal on my website.

"Here Birdie, Birdie!"

Actually, I'm not sure this would really hold up for much of a bird... we had parakeets for years, and I've realized that birds are actually pretty messy animals. Cardstock... bird... not a good combo.

But fortunately, it's not hard to have a cute Designer Series Paper bird with the new Extra Large Two-Step Bird Punch in the Occasions Mini Catalog! What a fun punch--all three elements are actually on the same punch. So you can punch them all out at once, or if you want different colors, put strips of cardstock in and punch just the elements you want.

On my birdhouse sides, I used the Sale-A-Bration Good Neighbor stamp set (one of the free choices with a $50 order during Sale-A-Bration). This is my 6-year old daughter's new favorite stamp set. All the little roofs and trees and buildings are different pieces so you can mix and match anything you like!

The main part of the birdhouse uses the Mini Milk Carton Die, which is actually the Big Shot die featured in my February Big Shot Die of the Month Club. This sweet little birdhouse is one of the 4 projects that you'll make when you sign up for my club.

You'll get the Mini Milk Carton die as part of your Club fee ($42), plus you'll receive pre-cut cardstock and embellishments ready-to-stamp along with printed directions for 4 projects. Just use whatever stamps and inks you have on hand at home, and your new Big Shot die!

If you've never tried one of my clubs, this is a great chance to try one out. You can even add to your Big Shot Die of the Month Club order and receive a free Sale-A-Bration stamp set of your choice! (Click here to learn more about my Big Shot Club)

Give Me an L, Give Me an O, Give Me a V...

What does that spell? "LOVE" of course! Valentine's Day is nearly upon us, so I wanted to get my quilted pennant banner ready. I'm not sure the photo does it justice though. This banner has been hanging in my front hall for a little while and it always draws a compliment.

So why am I showing a quilting project on my Stampin' Up! blog? Good question... because the pieces for this fabric project are cut entirely with my Big Shot diecut machine and my Stampin' Up! Big Shot dies.

The fabric matches the Scallop Square Die bag that I posted recently. (check it out) I had some material left over, so I pulled out my Stampin' Up! Pennant Die (113483) and started cutting.

Each triangle Pennant piece is actually 3 layers--the front, the cotton batting in the middle and the matching back fabric. After cutting, I stitched all 3 layers together along the scalloped edges. Then I added the Scallop Circle (113468) in the brown fabric, stitched around that in a circle, and then layered the Serif Essentials (113464) letter on top. I actually used Stampin' Up!'s Tombow Multiadhesive for the letter--turns out to be a great fabric glue!

Each of the pennant pieces was laid out on a long strip of the Chocolate Chip Stitched Grosgrain Ribbon (111849) and layered with little scallops cut using the Pennant Die (gotta love multi-purpose dies!). Then I topstitched the small scallops and pennants in place along the ribbon to finish the banner.

This banner was so simple--I highly recommend giving it a try! If you don't sew at all (I had to drag my machine out of its 5-year storage spot), you can still make these. Just plan to glue your layers together instead of sewing.

I'm already working on my next banner--the kids have been asking for banners with their names!

Sweet Pea Stitched Felt to Last A Lifetime

Have you had a chance to try the new Sweet Pea Stitched Felt from the Occasions Mini Catalog yet? I've been using it on projects left and right lately (like on my Stamps in the Mail Club projects--which you can still sign up for!)

The good news is that with the new My Sweet Pea Digital Kit, you can add as many Stitched Felt pieces to your projects as you want... and you can print them endlessly (or until you run out of printer ink)! This is a stationery piece that I designed for a quick note that I needed to send, and it's created with My Digital Studio.

**My Digital Studio Quick Tip** To make the center part of the stationery sheet have the same pattern as the background, except more subtle, add a layer of Whisper White cardstock over the background, then change the opacity of the cardstock layer to less than 100%. The colors of the background paper will dictate whether the number should be 50% or 90%. Try a few and see what you like!

The Sweet Pea Digital Kit can be used with My Digital Studio, the super-fabulous digital papercrafting program from Stampin' Up!, or you can use the elements with other graphics programs that accept jpg and png images. That's just one more reason to love My Digital Studio--it's a program that 'plays well with others!'

(click here for more details about My Digital Studio)

After I made the first piece of stationery, I just had to try out a few more of the background papers. Not only does the Sweet Pea Digital Kit come with the Stitched Felt, but it also includes a few stamp images (exclusive to MDS!) plus the fabulous Sweet Pea Designer Paper Pack pages--all 48 patterns!!

If you already own My Digital Studio, it's easy to add the new downloads to your collection. Just visit my online ordering page, then use the links on the left side of the page: Order Online > Digital Crafting > My Digital Downloads > Newest Downloads

Then just follow the prompts to purchase your digital downloads, check out, download them, and run the automatic installers to have the elements appear in your MDS menus.

If you don't have My Digital Studio yet, you can still purchase the digital downloads to use with your favorite graphics program, or you can purchase My Digital Studio through my online ordering page.

Better yet, did you know that there's a way to get your copy of My Digital Studio at a discount? You bet there is--nearly a 50% discount! There is a Digital "I Want It ALL" kit that includes the program plus an assortment of 'real' stamps, inks and cardstocks. If you'd like more details about the kit, you can send me an email or visit my website.
